The Love Triangle
By Steve Arterburn*
Aside from worshiping in church, Don felt that religion was a private thing to be engaged in alone. To him, reading the Bible in the presence of others—as his aging mother-in-law did—was just being showy. “I think she’s cramming for her finals,” he quipped to his wife, Wanda.
He had resisted Wanda’s attempts to engage in devotionals with him until he struck a deal: she said she’d watch the Final Four with him if he would read the Bible with her every morning for two weeks.
For the first four or five mornings, their readings went pretty much as Don expected. He read his part of the Scriptures with a leaden voice, mumbling and rushing to the end. But at some point his attitude began to change. There was something appealing about the two of them together in the early hours engaged in a shared activity. Soon afterward, Don began to feel a presence in the room that was drawing him and Wanda closer together. At the end of the two weeks, he suggested that they continue the practice.
As Don described it later, “It was as if Wanda and I began far apart at the two bottom corners of an equilateral triangle. As we began reading, we felt a presence drawing us upward along the triangle’s two sides. Naturally, the closer we drew to the triangle’s apex, the closer we got to each other. I soon realized that at the apex was God himself.”
Don experienced a great truth that will strengthen every marriage. When a couple turns their focus toward God, he becomes the third partner in the marriage and binds the three of them together in an eternal bond of love.
Today’s Thought based on Luke 6:37
“One of the best ways I know to increase a couple’s connection with God is to...read together from the Bible and to pray with each other. This strengthens their connection to God— the third partner in their marriage.” —Stephen Arterburn, The 7 Minute Marriage Solution

"Father, plant in our hearts the desire to study your words and love your laws and precepts. May our focus on your Word lead us closer to you and to each other. Amen."
